Alan M. Rifkin, managing partner of the firm, is a well-recognized commercial and business attorney who has represented many national and international corporations and institutions. Recognized by The Daily Record in 2007 as one of the 50 “Influential Marylanders” and Super Lawyers® Magazine for 2008, 2009 and 2010 as one of the area’s premier sports and entertainment lawyers, Mr. Rifkin was former Governor William Donald Schaefer’s first Chief Legislative Officer and Counsel. In that position, he received acclaim for his management of the Governor’s initiatives, including the establishment of Oriole Park at Camden Yards, tort reform, and school funding reform. Mr. Rifkin also served as Counsel to the Senate of Maryland under former Senate President, Melvin A. “Mickey” Steinberg.
Mr. Rifkin’s current areas of practice include business law and transactions, sports law and transactions and complex civil and commercial litigation. Whether in the courtroom, boardroom or administrative hearing room, Mr. Rifkin has successfully negotiated, litigated or favorably settled many complicated and often public commercial disputes.
In the area of sports law, Mr. Rifkin has been outside counsel to the Baltimore Orioles in a wide variety of matters, including rights fee agreements, licensing agreements, telecast contracts, naming rights, sponsorship agreements and litigation matters. He recently negotiated an agreement with Sarasota, Florida to construct a new spring training venue for the Club. Mr. Rifkin also represented the Baltimore Orioles and its regional sports network, the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network (MASN®) in negotiations with Major League Baseball resulting from the relocation of the Montreal Expos to Washington, D.C. Mr. Rifkin now serves as counsel to the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network. He also represents the Maryland Jockey Club, owners of the Preakness® Stakes and Pimlico Racecourse in a wide variety of commercial, regulatory and litigation matters. Mr. Rifkin previously has represented the Washington Redskins on a variety of matters, including the proposed relocation of the franchise from Washington, D.C. to Maryland.
In addition to his sports law practice, Mr. Rifkin also maintains an active commercial and business law practice representing a wide variety of local and national businesses and institutions on contract and transactional matters, partnership and corporate issues. He is experienced in litigating complex commercial disputes, mediation and arbitration.
In the area of civil litigation, Mr. Rifkin represented the widow of one of the U.S. Postal Workers who died as a result of contact with the now infamous “anthrax letters” mailed to the United States Congress.
In the area of election laws and commercial litigation, Mr. Rifkin represented the first successful local petition effort in over a decade, sending to the ballot the issue of zoning for a large video lottery facility in Anne Arundel County.
Mr. Rifkin serves on the Board of Directors of the State Capital Global Law Firm Group, the Howard County Hospital Foundation, the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation, the Cal Ripken, Sr. Collegiate Baseball League and the Aspire Foundation. Previously, Mr. Rifkin has served on the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra Board and other civic boards. He also has been selected as a Hall of Fame Honoree by The Chimes and honored by the Shock Trauma Associates, P.A., Morgan State University and the Economic Forum of Howard County.
Mr. Rifkin has been published on a number of occasions in the areas of law and government. Mr. Rifkin has been a guest lecturer before the Maryland Institute for Continuing Professional Education of Lawyers (MICPEL) on the topic of sports law and was an adjunct professor of state and local government at Loyola College. He is active in civic, professional and charitable organizations.
